Woori Yallock Football/Netball Club are saddened by the passing of past premiership player and Best & Fairest winner Dennis (Sam) Donovan.
In the 1970 grand final against Healesville Sam played at centre half forward, at ½ time Woori were up by 5 goals, at ¾ time Healesville had closed the gap and Woori were leading by 15 points while in the huddle listening to Terry Rowe’s ¾ time speech Sam mentioned to Stan Haag I think I might go into the backline.
As the ball was about to be bounced Terry looked to the forward line and Sam was not there. Terry told Sam to go back to the forward line, but this request fell upon deaf ears, Sam ignored this request and stayed in the back line for most of the 1/4. I believe Sam took around 10 marks in the backline which prevented Healesville from scoring. Sam kicked the winning goal by kicking a 70metre drop kick, Woori winning by 3 points.
Final Score: Woori Yallock 16.11.107 Healesville: 14.20.104
